Intro to Ice Climbing
Whether you are looking to extend your climbing season into the winter months or have dreams of scaling frozen waterfalls, the journey starts here. Our Intro to Ice Climbing course introduces foundational skills needed to safely begin your journey into climbing Waterfall Ice.

Who should take this course?
The Intro to Ice Climbing course is designed to give climbers with a basic knowledge of climbing techniques the unique opportunity to experience winter climbing. If you’ve spent time in the gym or on the rocks and want to learn how to use crampons and ice tools to ascend frozen flows, this is for you.
What will you learn?
The goal of this course is to provide students with the skills to manage themselves safely at a winter crag and develop efficient ice climbing movement.
The day will be packed with essential information and will include a variety of hands-on exercises, group discussions, and real practice in the vertical environment.
Course topics include but are not limited to:

Environmental Awareness: Identifying ice quality and objective winter hazards (falling ice, navigation hazards, and cold management).

Technical Gear: Proper use and care of ice tools, crampons, and winter-specific hardware.

Movement on Ice: Proper body position, efficient tool placements, "reading"the ice and finding rests in your climb.

Belaying in Winter: Managing ropes in freezing conditions and belaying with gloves.

Scene Management: Keeping gear organized in the snow and staying warm between climbs.

Leave No Trace: Specific ethics for winter environments and ice climbing access.
Prerequisites

Belay Skills: Participants must be competent and confident in top-rope belaying (gym experience is acceptable).

Fitness: Ability to hike for 20 minutes uphill in winter conditions carrying a backpack.

Attitude: A willingness to embrace the cold!
